80% of a wind turbine’s energy is generated from the blade

Did you know that around 80% of a wind turbine’s energy is generated from the outer half of the blade?

After analyzing and working with dozens of blades from different OEMs we have observed the importance of maintaining blades – and especially the outer half of the blade which contributes by up to 80% of the produced energy.

The blade’s local speed increases the closer you get to the blade tip, and this higher speed makes it more likely to develop leading edge roughness which causes a loss in the annual energy production.

This underlines the significance of prioritizing optimal blade conditions – both in terms of maintenance and upgrading.

Note: The number stems from internal Boundary Element Method (BEM) analyses.
